Why is it that Microsoft Windows has gained so much popularity when it presents more defects than other OS’s?

Mechanicarts asked:

Don’t get me wrong; I’m a Windows user since my first ever interactions with a PC.

The thing is, now that I am in University, a good deal of our academic practice has to be done on Mac’s. I was astonished to see Mac’s flashy graphics, certainly more high-level than Windows’s, and I was told it has fewer bugs and issues than Windows (though I myself haven’t tested it yet).

So how is it that Windows is the standard when other OS’s (Mac is simply an example) are so much better?
I’m not sure…if you are talking about OS, MACOS Snow Leopard is only 29$ whereas Windows 7 is 120$…now for the hardware part, well I don’t know.

I would say because windows is cheaper. People are cheap and don’t want to spend more and a lot of people don’t know the difference between a mac and PC so they get what is cheaper. I go to a graphic design school and everybody knows a mac is better but we have way more PCs than macs and that’s because they are cheaper.

That’s not my opinion though but I think that could be why.

What you’re not seeing is underlying functionality.

No other operating system can even come close to Windows for large, complicated networks when it comes to ease of administration, scalability, and functionality.

Also, most of the problems people have with Windows are user error, not the operating system.

EDIT: I am NOT trying to get into an OSX vs Windows debate. That’s pointless, especially in a place such as this.

Windows is not a bad operating system. I have never had a serious problem with it, and it has consistantly done above and beyond what has been required of it throughout my professional career. There are a few things that bother me about it; hardware interactions, slowdowns caused by unavailable SMB connections, etc. It also has had a historically poor default configuration. Not that OSX, Linux, or anything else has really done much better overall. The advantage of the other systems is a better configuration out of the box, combined with a complete lack of market share.

PCs are cheaper. And PCs ship with Windows.
