Why does my macbook pro slow?

test mac os
Gerardo C asked:

I just bought a mac book pro and the wireless internet is slow as hell when i am away from my router. I ran a diagnostic check and it says everything thing is well. I feel that I don’t need to run one of those test that shows how fast my internet is. ITS SLOW! The only time its decent is when i am by my router.

Could the router be outdated? I bought it last year. It says its compatible with Mac OS X v10.4x. Im running Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard. I don’t want to buy a new router and it ends up not solving my dilemma.

The most common cause of the problems you have described are weak signal. The location of your router is key. I have seen routers placed in corners, behind TV’s, in basements and under stairs to name a few places. None of these are ideal, especially in newer properties where steel frame stud walls block radio signals. If your wifi works well when you are in the same room as your router, positioning is the likely cause. Also, have a look at the region settings in your router. The US region broadcasts 26 decibels higher than the others, so switching could help. You could also change the channel that you use, as your problem could be cause by interference from other networks in your area.

There are so many factors as to why the laptop is slow, and it has nothing to do with the fact is is a mac. Saying your connection is slow is like going to the doctor and telling he/she that your hair is falling out: there is a whole list of reasons as to why it is happening. The same thing happened to me when I first got the macbook. My initial problem was that I live in an apartment near downtown across from some office buildings. Sophist it to say, we are all vying for the same wireless signal. Call your internet provider first. Sometimes they’ll have you on a crowded portal or channel, and they’ll shake things up. You should buy a D- Link, as well. As well, do as many software updates as possible, they’ll make the computer run faster and of course with macs, they are free.
