I am a makeup artist, and work at Mac.
Mac doesn’t make the best mascaras, but some decent ones are:
Plush Lash Mascara – Plumps up lashes really well, with one swipe. This mascara is for a voluminous “fake lash” effect. $12.
Zoom Lash Mascara – Lengthens and thickens lashes, more of a watery consistency. Jet black in color. $12.
For a base, Mac makes Prep + Prime skin, I don’t use it, but i’ve heard mixed feelings about it. I suggest getting a sample before buying.
Blot Powder – Comes in Pressed and Loose and is applied after your makeup is completely done to set it and to keep away oils. Best for oily skin, will leave dry skin very dry. Around $25.
Mac makes great eyeshadows, they sell both cream and powdered shadows in natural and vibrant colors with lots of pigmentation. Some staples to get are: Nylon (shimmery beige), Brun (olive brown), Electra (silver), Carbon (black), Brown Down (reddish teddy bear brown), Satin Taupe (pearl taupe), Woodwinked (shimmery gold-copper), Sketch (maroon brown), Fig.1 (gorgeous vibrant purple) and Contrast (dark navy blue). I suggest going to your local Mac store and trying the eyeshadows out to see which ones you like best. They come in several different “finishes’”, such as pearl, veluxe, satin, frost, lustre, etc. but all you need to do is play around with them to see what kind you like.
Paint Pots – Are good to use as a base for eye shadows and to even out eye lids. It goes on creamy and dries to a powder and helps shadows stay put with no creasing. Get a **** color, such as Soft Ochre or Bare Study. $16 ea.
To be honest, Mac brushes are kinda expensive. I use a mix of Mac brushes and regular artist brushes from an art supply store (which are of the same quality, just cheaper). If you are using liquid foundation, it would be wise to purchase the 187 “Skunk” brush, as it leaves foundation looking ‘airbrushed’. The 134 or 150 are soft fluff brushes used for powder application, but you can find similar brushes at an art store made of soft goat hair for $10 (try Windsor & Newton 240 Series). You could even try Sonia Kashuk’s line of brushes to get a few staples, such as a foundation brush, and a concealer brush. Brushes that’ll you’ll probably need: eyeliner brush (209), fluff brush (213), blending brush (217 or 222), angle brush (263), blush brush (116), and a shader (239).
For foundations, it depends on skin type, try them out to feel texture and weight, and make sure to get a sample before buying.
oilier skin – Studio Fix fluid or powder (medium+ coverage), Studio Stick (medium+ coverage), Select SPF 15 (medium+ coverage), or Studio Tech.
combo skin – Studio Fix (medium+ coverage), Studio Stick (medium+ coverage), Select SPF 15 (medium+ coverage), Studio Tech (medium+ coverage), Studio Sculpt (medium+ coverage), Mineralize Loose (light+ coverage) all work nicely.
dry skin – Studio Stick (medium+ coverage), Studio Sculpt (medium+ coverage), Moistureblend (sheer+ coverage), Face & Body (sheer+ coverage), Mineralize Satinfinish (low+ coverage), and Mineralize Loose (light+ coverage).
Hope this helps!
Powder: Blot Powder/Pressed
This powder is specifically made to get rid of shine and add a matte finish. This is small enough to keep in your purse/pocket for daily touch ups. And comes with a fluffly applicater that even distrubutes product on your face. It also comes with a mirror to see the results. It works great, in my opinion, and get’s rid of major shine with one application.
Mascara: Plush Lash
Has been a MAC favorite mascara for several years. Comes with a big, plushy mascara applicator. The results are silky, sexy, but natural lashes that looks like you just got lash extensions.
Eye Shadow Base: MAC Paintpots
They come in neutral colors to apply as a base for your other eye shadows. It leaves your eye’s perfect for the whole day. It makes your eye shadow not smudge, rub off, crease, smear, etc. I suggest you buy a really neutral color so you can use it under any eye shadow without showing through.
Eye Shadow: MAC Eye Shadows
For beginers I suggest using the basic, eye shadow. It comes in a large cariety of colors (purples, blacks, slivers, even ORANGE) So you can find your perfect color. Are a bit pricey, but worth the money. You can get them from variety of textures: Matte, Frost, Lustre, Veluxe Pearl, Satin, Velvet, Starflash, and Veluxe.
Brushes:
For Begginers, here are the basic brushes you should have:
Foundation: 187 Duo Fiber Brush
Powder: 150 Large Powder Brush
Blush: 116 Blush Brush
Brow Brush: 208 Angled Brow Brush
Eye Liner: 209 Eye Liner Brush
Eye Shadow: 213 Fluff Brush
Eye Shadow (Blending): 222 Tapered Blending Brush
Lineing/Blending Eye Liner/Shading: 263 Small Angle Brush
Lip Liner: 311 Lip Liner Brush
Lip Brush: 316 Lip Brush/Covered Brush
(I suggest you also buy the MAC Brush Cleaner. It will clean, disinfect, and condition your brushes for your next application. It leaves your brushes like you just bought them)
I love Mac eyeshadows/pigments, studio fix powder foundation and blot powder.
1. Eyeshadows.
2. Eye pencils.
3. Lipsticks.
4. Lipliners.
Are the best products of MAC.
The mascaras are the worst.
HD powder by MAKE UP FOREVER PROFESSIONAL is the best.
VICHY liquid foundation is fantastic.
MASTERPIECE MASCARA BY MAX FACTOR is wonderful.
Hope that helped.
Good Luck.
