We have an iMac OS X which we have had sitting broken on the desk for years so i’m trying to fix it.
When booting up it says ‘invalid memory access… to continue booting type mac-boot and press enter’ I have tried this but it just sits there for hours doing nothing with the loading symbol flashing.
I have a hardware test disk, but it says to use it you must hold down ‘c’ whilst the computer starts up and then follow a few instructions before inserting the disk. Nothing happens when i hold down C so should i just try putting the disk in anyway?
I also have a ‘software install and repair’ cd, so should i try this too?
Basically any help is appreciated, especially if you can tell me how to fix the ‘invalid memory access’ problem.
Thank you xx

AH see this is a very commen problem…it normally happens when u make the mistake of buying a mac…..stick with a pc next time, atlest those are fixable.
This sounds like a hardware issue, not a software issue.
As the error message says, it’s having a problem accessing the computer’s memory modules.
Do you have a Hardware Test CD to check the hardware and RAM?
If not, you will have to open it up. Hopefully it will be a simple problem like the memory modules are loose so you would just pull it out and reseat it to make sure they are inserted firmly. Also check for any loose cables and make sure everything is connected.
Worse case is if the memory modules themselves have gone bad and you will need to buy new RAM to replace them.
Here are the specs on the iMac RAM if you need to buy new ones:
