i saw a video on youtube in which somebody showed that vista stole many ideas from mac os x like search box,widgets,3d chess and when i installed linux ubuntu i found test memory in the boot menu like vistas i also found a show desktop button in the task bar and windows aero looks much like the visual effects in ubuntu.Has windows became popular by stealing ideas from other oss?

they’ve been sayin that since both windows and apple started… (since bill and steve went to college together)
try a new line maybe.
even mac users are seeing things differently now w/ windfows 7 ( a re-vamp/retool of vista), all 4% of them.
Who cares?
Improvements are great.
vista was in the making for a while so maybe other ppl like mac and linux got a spy and copied off of windows vista and made the features a lot better so mac and linux would look better than windows maybe
well if Windows is a thief, then judging by Windows Vista, they are terrible at it.
EDIT: however thumbs down this answer, obviously dont have windows vista, bunch of idiots.
Yea, not just Vista. Remember Graphical User Interphase (GUI)? With the mouse and all that stuff. Apple made a patient for it, but somehow it still got onto Windows.
Other than the GUI Windows did not steal anymore features from other operating systems. The features compared to other operating systems are totally different. No matter how alike they look they have different codes written in them.
In a way, yes.
However, this is because MS doesn’t want to have its users left out, right?
Would you want Windows to NOT have a feature just because some other OS also had it?
Why not remove the Close, Maximize, and Minimize buttons, or the idea of a My Computer folder?
Just try to live with it. All the best ideas in the world are better off combined anyways.
In U.S they will sue you for throwing a **** in the street. imagine if MICROSOFT would be stealing from other companies.
Vista is an inatimate object incapable of performing acts of free will. So, no, Vista is not a big thief.
Microsoft, although considered an evil empire by many, is merely an entity: A corporation capable of great good and dasterdly evil. All sizeable corporations are… Because Microsoft often plays hardball when interacting with others, and because of their success and their size, they are attacked the most.
Don’t get me wrong; I am not a huge Microsoft fan, nor am I a huge mac fan… and I don’t think that the many flavors of open source Linux will somehow contribute to world peace.
I’m just a guy that is sick of people whining about Microsoft.
