how can i fix my comatose macbook pro?

test mac os
melissa f asked:

i have a macbook pro that i bought in sept two years ago…15″ that was running 10.4.11 i believe? i decided i needed to install windows for some things, so i installed leopard just fine, put in the partition and then when i went to install windows a friend said i need to wipe my whole computer first and just start over when doing this. we hooked his macbook up to mine, and we wiped my whole computer using target disk mode and tried to install leopard through the host computer’s optical drive.

we got a kernel panic- restart…

we’ve reset the PRAM, tried removing the battery & holding power for 10 seconds, made a GUID Partition, booted from install discs, tried to run the apple hardware test (it just flashes a folder with a question mark in response),….

finally trying something, we received text behind the kernel error, which read:
“0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.aple.system.fs] [ErrType IO] [ErrNo 5] [10Type Road] [PBUkNum 4766994] [LBUkNum 0] [FSLogMsgID XXXXXXXXX [FSLogMsgOrder First] 0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.apple.system.fs] [FSLogMsgID XXXXXXXXX [FSLogMsgOrder Last]”

im hoping its not hardware. can a hardware problem just pop up like this, caused by a reinstall? the computer really worked totally fine before this- no problems aside from the dvd drive breaking early on (every mac laptop ive had loses them so i dont care so much anymore- i have an external)…

now when we turn on the computer not attempting to install, we just get the flashing question mark folder, which makes sense as that indicates that its trying to find an OS, and it doesnt have one….

does anyone have any ideas? we have an appt at the mac store tomorrow but im not sure how much theyll help us considering my lack of applecare.

looks like you’d either have to pay 50 – 100 for repairs or get a new one, my friend

Not having AppleCare [big mistake] you will have to pay for whatever they do. First, get rid of your friend, he does’t know his *** from a hole in the wall. No reason to reformat the hard drive if you did the partition. If is was needed the Windows disc would tell you. If you didn’t know anyone who has a Mac, what would you have done, I’ll tell you. Install WinBloze or go to the AppleStore and have them do it. Keep this in mind for the future.

Ya know, I hear people say that you need to wipe the drive. However, I had 10.4.11 Tiger, and I just installed Leopard over it. And, as for Windows, I just loaded up Boot Camp and install it. Really, that’s all you probably needed to do. It worked for me.
