robinwhale asked:

I am having speed issues with my internet connection. Need to know what I’m talking about when I complain.

My computer OS is up to date, and my ethernet router is too.

Recently my internet speed has dropped dramatically. I am on an 8 Mbps (maximum) package with my ISP (Orange UK) and have been getting speeds about 4.5 Mbps to 5.0 Mbps in my semi-rural location.

My connection dropped to a crawl and using the speed tester on http://www.thinkbroadband.com I noticed that my speed has dropped from an average of 4500 Kbps – 5100 Kbps in December to an all time low of 89 Kbps on the 8th February.

In January I was fluctuating wildly from 4500 Kbps to 700 Kbps within a matter of a few hours.

A fault was found on my phone line which was fixed 5 days ago, but from the 8th February to the 10th I still only had a maximum of 127 Kbps downstream (366 Kbps upstream). The last three days my speed has increased to 1175 Kbps downstream (366 Kbps), and an ongoing series of phone calls to Orange UK (on a premium rate line!) resulted in my being told to use the official speed tester on the British Telecom web site (http://speedtester.bt.com).

After 14 tests over three days covering both peak usage times and low usage times my latest results from BT are as follows:-

13th February 2009 – 11:23
DSL Connection Rate – 6464 kbps (downstream), 448 kbps (upstream)
IP Profile for line – 1250 kbps
Actual IP throughput – 1167 kbps

I am getting ready to phone my ISP, use harsh language and demand my MAC code but first I want to make sure I understand the results.

I believe that the DSL connection rate is the theoretical maximum that my physical phone line can handle – though in reality it is rarely achieved.

The actual IP throughput of 1167 Kbps is the “real” speed I am getting.

My question: What is the “IP Profile for line”? What is an “IP Profile”?

The IP Profile is set at 1250 Kbps (1.1 Mbps), and the BT Speed Tester informs me that “your configured download throughput speed for this service is 1250 k.”

I suppose the big question is “who has CONFIGURED the maximum profile/speed to be 1250 Kbps”?

Has my speed been limited to 1250 Kbps by the phone company, my ISP or is it some arcane setting on my computer?

If there is anyone up on “geek speak” who can give me a clue as to what this all means before I make an idiot of myself ranting at some 20 year old call centre operative I would much appreciate it.

Bodybuildin’ asked:

Here’s some background knowledge:

I’m a member of my school’s television broadcasting crew (I’m pretty sure we have the BEST and MOST EXPENSIVE school studio in the Midwest so ha!)

But anyways, we use Final Cut Pro to edit segments. I’m installing a Mac OS on my PC in a couple days (yes, it’s a possible through an emulater) and installing FCP.

This way, I’ll be able to edit my segments at school and at home.

When I edit my video at home, in order to access my edited footage (file) at school I have to upload it to the internet. I use a site called “ANGEL” which our school “hosts.” When I upload, and later access my footage (which I’ve already tested, of course) it is of lesser quality. Sure, it’s all there; but it’s just poorer quality.

Is there anyway I can upload high quality videos on the internet? So when I download them, they’ll be near equal quality of the original footage?
